Whitman Place Condominiums

Located at 1275 25th Street NW, Washington, DC 20037 | West End

With its dramatic rounded corner at 25th and N Street, Whitman Place evokes memories of Art Deco or Steamship Moderne design principals. But in actuality, this eight-story West End condominium was built in 1990, and adds a contemporary flair to the otherwise traditional concept. Modern elements take on an even greater influence once inside the residential units themselves. In many ways, the building mirrors developmental trends in a neighborhood that continues to evolve over time.

There are 35 condo units at Whitman Place, with one and two-bedroom floorplans ranging in size from around 600 to over 1,300 square feet of sunny living space. The eight-story building is part of a local housing expansion that began in the 1970s. Other condominiums in the area include Atlas which is just down the street, the sleek 22 West a couple blocks away, and the highly modern Westlight on 24th Street. Not all the recent projects are brand-new, however. The Columbia with its historic Italian Renaissance-style architecture was one of the nation’s top women’s hospital for many decades before being redeveloped as condos in 2006.

More About Whitman Place, Washington, DC

A domed awning welcomes residents into the red brick Whitman Place and then into the marble lobby. The condos themselves strike a nice balance between traditional, organic layouts and the more current vogue of open space concepts. Hardwood floors gleam from natural light that pours in through huge windows. Some kitchens are the original galley designs, but many others have been opened up and remodeled over time, including new counters and appliances. In-unit washers and dryers are standard, and the bathrooms are nicely finished as well. Upper level units enjoy oversized private terraces, with bedrooms also having access to these delightful outdoor spaces. Generally speaking, condo residences at Whitman Place are competitively priced, especially when compared to some of the highest end addresses such as Westlight or the Ritz-Carlton West End.

Residents at the pet-friendly Whitman Place enjoy a lobby, bike room, extra storage, and a roof deck with terrific views. Most but not all condos come with assigned garage parking. Location is also an important part of the appeal, with the Francis Dog Park and the Olympic-sized Francis Pool right across the street. Francis Park is just one section of an extended greenbelt that also includes Rock Creek Trail, Rose Park, and West End Garden. The neighborhood itself is one of the oldest in Washington, DC and once represented the westernmost edge of the original mapping of the federal district. That changed over time, as next-door Georgetown and other communities came into the fold. The West End of today represents a fascinating blend of old and new, with great shops and restaurants and a close proximity to the downtown area.
