Tilden Gardens Cooperative

Located at 3900 Connecticut, Washington, DC 20008 | Cleveland Park

One of the earliest cooperatives in Washington, DC, Tilden Gardens is also one of the largest and grandest. In fact, until the Watergate complex was built in the 1960s, Tilden held the record for size. With six Tudor-style buildings set on five verdant acres of land in the Cleveland Park neighborhood, the historic coop community is home to some 210 units. Designed by the Washington firm of Parks and Baxter, along with Harry L. Edwards, and built by the Warren brothers over a three year period, the complex was delivered in stages with the final building completed in 1930.

The six five-story towers with their brownstone bricks and limestone detailing were built in cross shapes, three are cruciform and three are actually double cruciform. The apartments are quite spacious, with floorplans from one to three bedrooms and generally ranging from 743 to 1,714 square feet. There is a notable exception, with a 3,600 square foot residence that was once the Tilden Gardens Café in the main building. All residential units have at least two exposures, while many have three, allowing for plenty of natural light. The ceilings are high, and there are lots of original architectural details such as vintage oak hardwood floors, French doors, arched entries, large multi-paned windows, built-ins, and wainscoting.

More About Tilden Gardens, Washington, DC

The Depression-era Tilden Gardens project was unique in many ways. Similar to the Broadmoor Cooperative, also in Cleveland Park and built at the same time, Tilden Gardens is positioned on an unusually large piece of land. The Warren brothers chose to use only 1.5 acres of the heavily wooded lot for the actual buildings, with landscape designer E. H. Bauer preserving the high ground with its towering shade trees, filling in other areas with walkways, gardens, shrubs, and a reflecting pool. Each building has its own parking garage, and the apartments featured innovations for the time period such as electric refrigerators, and radio outlets with aerial connectors. The onsite restaurant opened in 1929 and continued to serve meals until 1970.

While the official street address for Tilden Gardens is 3000 Tilden Street, that is actually only the main building. Co-op shoppers might also find listings indicating the addresses of the other buildings on Tilden Street, Sedgewick Street, and Connecticut Avenue. These lovely apartments have seen plenty of renovations and remodels during nearly a century of existence, and you’ll often find combinations of old and new, with gourmet kitchens and luxurious baths. There’s a staffed front desk in the main building, a general manager and support staff, and a resident maintenance person for each building. Each building also has its own laundry room with no charge for machines, security cameras, and keyless entry. There’s a community room, multiple hobby rooms, parking garages and additional outdoor spaces, bike storage, private storage lockers, and furnished guest suites.
