The Wyoming Condominium

Located at 2022 Columbia Road NW, Washington, DC 20009 | Kalorama

In a neighborhood known for its grand old residential buildings, The Wyoming stands out. The distinction isn’t so much its style, as the imposing Beaux Arts design draws from the same architectural influences as several other buildings in the Kalorama neighborhood. The real difference is the sheer size of the condominium with two very stout seven-story towers and a whopping 105 residences, absolutely dwarfing fellow landmark buildings like The Carthage with 27 units and St. Nicholas with 31.

More About The Wyoming, Washington, DC

Residences at the pet-friendly building typically range in size from one to three bedrooms, and from 562 square feet to around 2,200 square feet. However, there are exceptions, such as a 3,200 square foot apartment with five bedrooms. The floorplans are traditional and elegant, with marble foyer entries, built-ins, high ceilings, crown molding, formal dining rooms, and glorious vintage hardwood floors.

Developed by Lester A. Barr and designed by B. Stanley Simmons, The Wyoming was built over the course of five years, from 1905 to 1910. Each of the towers was built separately, and with a central portion housing a magnificent lobby and entrance representing the final stage of construction. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and featured in James Goode’s “Best Addresses,” the former apartment community for upper class Washingtonians was renovated and converted to condos in 1983.

Many of the individual units have been remodeled since that time, including the removal of some kitchen walls in order to achieve the open space concept that is so popular today. On the other hand, many condo owners prefer the original galley-style kitchens, albeit with updated appliances and counters.

The central lobby is one for the ages with its marble mosaic floors, giant pillars, exquisite wall panels, and soaring ceilings with floral plaster detailing. The remarkable space can be seen in the 1997 political action-thriller “Absolute Power” starring and directed by Clint Eastwood.

Building amenities are notably eclectic and reminiscent of a bygone era, including a 24-hour front desk, concierge, doorman, a woodworking shop, a photography dark room, a reception room, a catering kitchen, business center, a roof deck with panoramic views, a rear garden, a children’s play area, a bike room, and extra storage. The Wyoming is located at the northern end of the affluent Kalorama neighborhood, quite close to Adams Morgan. It’s a very walk-friendly area with numerous historic buildings, and just a few blocks from popular restaurants along 18th Street.
