Developed by Melvin Gelman and designed in the International style of architecture by Julian E. Berla and Joseph H. Abel, the Towers is comprised of two 13-story buildings known as Towers East and Towers West. The project was constructed over a two-year period and delivered in 1960 as luxury rental apartments. Gelman and his family lived in what is known as the largest penthouse in the city, a two-story residence with 9,450 square feet of luxurious living space. The Towers was converted to condos in 1979 and is included in James B. Goode’s notable “Best Addresses” book. Surrounding neighborhoods include American University Park to the north, Cleveland Park to the east, Observatory Circle to the south, and Wesley Heights to the west.
More About the Towers, Washington, DC
Pulling into the long, circular front drive of the Towers, a wide portes-cocheres serves to welcome guests and residents to the expansive property. The two residential buildings are connected by a staffed lobby with doormen, and long walkways that are enclosed by glass on two sides. The apartments were designed in a mid-century modernist style that was so popular at the time, and that has come back into vogue in recent years. Original parquet wooden floors are complemented by extra-wide windows, and many of the units have some sort of private outdoor space, with ground level patios and upper level cubist balconies. Many of the apartments have been remodeled over the years, including makeovers from some of the region’s top interior designers and architects.
The Towers has been described as a neighborhood in itself, with all the conveniences you might need including an onsite grocery store with ATM, a hairdresser, valets, package delivery, and dry cleaning pickup. The expansive 12-acre property includes manicured lawns, walking paths, a giant courtyard, a swimming pool, a terrific fitness center, tennis courts, a cab stand in the driveway, and garage parking. The verdant serenity continues with next-door Glover Archbold Park. But there are also nearby restaurants such as Chef Geoff’s, and Al Dente Ristorante, as well as a Starbucks and local businesses. There are multiple bus stops right outside the Towers complex, and driving into Georgetown, and Downtown DC is a breeze.
