The Embassy Condominiums
Located at 1613 Harvard Street NW, Washington, DC 20009 | Columbia Heights
With its impressive Beaux-Arts design, the Embassy is a historic five-story building with multiple wings and an ideal location. The white structure with its flat rooflines and white façade is located along the curve of Harvard Street, and along Mount Pleasant Avenue as well. We are including the building in the Columbia Heights neighborhood, but it is technically on the cusp of next-door Mount Pleasant, as Harvard Street serves as the boundary between the two communities.
THE EMBASSY Condos for Sale
Formerly known as the Embassy Apartments, this grand old property is featured in James M. Goode’s notable Best Addresses book, chronicling a century of Washington’s distinguished apartment houses. While most tax records date the building to 1923, the Mount Pleasant Historic District report for the D.C. Historic Preservation Office describes it as having been designed in 1915 by prominent architect B. Stanley Simmons for developer H.R. Howenstein. Regardless of the exact origin, the fortress-like structure with its arched entries was renovated and converted to condominium usage in 2007.
More About the Embassy, Washington, DC
Located within easy strolling distance of the Columbia Heights Metro Station, the Embassy is also close to Rock Creek Park, the Adams Morgan neighborhood, and numerous popular restaurants. The renovation and redevelopment process resulted in 78 condo units within the three wings of the structure. Sizes range all the way from cute and cozy studios that start around 350 square feet, up to spacious two-bedroom residences with nearly 1,300 square feet of living space. There are plenty of layouts between those two markers, and the one common denominator is the care that was taken to blend Old World charm with new modernity. You’ll find lovely wood floors, built-ins, washers and dryers, and nicely appointed kitchens with stone counters and stainless steel appliances. Some units also have patios or balconies.
The pet-friendly building boasts a remarkable marble lobby that feels straight out of the Gilded Age with its ornate ceiling and polished floors. Residents also enjoy a fitness center, a library, a bike room, extra storage, a package room, laundry facilities, and a package room. There is a limited number of deeded parking spaces at the building, as well as the Columbia Metro just two blocks away. This is a very walkable neighborhood, with a fun and eclectic array of bakeries, bars, and restaurants, including the Potter’s House Café & Bookstore, Federalist Pig, Haydee’s, Mele Wine & Mezze, and the cozy Raven Grill, purported to be DC’s oldest neighborhood bar, dating back to 1935.
