The Centrie Condominiums
Located at 435 R Street NW, Washington, DC 20001 | Shaw
Described by Community Three developers as being at the center of it all, the Centrie is a contemporary four-story condominium in the Shaw neighborhood. Delivered in 2015, the boutique project is home to 22 stylish condo units with one and two-bedroom floorplans, ranging in size from approximately 575 to 975 square feet. Located just south of Rhode Island Avenue, the Centrie is on a leafy residential street that features a nice mixture of architecture, from historic to new.
Shaw itself is a historic neighborhood, named for Col. Robert Gould Shaw, a white Union officer who commanded an Africa-American Civil War infantry regiment before dying in action. The story was chronicled in the movie Glory with Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, and Morgan Freeman. But the neighborhood itself was developed after the end of the Civil War and was a bastion of Black culture with a vibrant music, arts and academic scene. More recently, the community has been going through a wave of development with new condo projects such as the Collection at R Street (right across the street), Adora, Perla, and Aperture.
More About the Centrie, Washington, DC
The Centrie was constructed on two adjoining lots, one that was vacant and the other housing a small drycleaners. The result is a handsome building with a white brick façade and shallow, boxy front bays. The condos themselves are open and sunny, with full-height windows and gleaming wood floors. One of the project’s most intriguing means of maximizing the square footage is the kitchen design, with chef-inspired cook spaces that are actually in the main living areas rather than adjacent to them. These intriguing food prep areas with their glossy white cabinetry and stainless steel appliances, lie flush against a side wall without dining bars or prep islands to take up additional room. The bathrooms have similar modern finishes including designer vessel sinks and imported tile. Front-loading washers and dryers stack neatly into hall closets.
The pet-friendly Centrie has its own surface parking that is accessible via the rear alley with approximately 11 spaces, some of which are covered. The building is also just a few blocks from the Shaw-Howard University Metro Station. It’s a vibrant area that combines the best of urban and residential sensibilities. Nearby recreation and greenspaces include Bundy Field, Cardoza Playground, and the Shaw Dog Park. There is also a nice selection of local bakeries, bars, restaurants, and boutique retailers. Ambar Shaw, Dacha Beer Garden, the Great American Bistro, Big Bear Café, the Dabney, and Beau Thai are all nearby. Also in the neighborhood is the historic Howard Theatre, the Watha T. Daniel Shaw Library, and Landmark’s Atlantic Plumbing Cinema.
