The Carthage was designed by Ernest C. Hunter and G. Neal Bell, prolific architects of the era whose other notable buildings include the nearby 2029 Connecticut Avenue. With its jutting cornice and distinctive shape, the former apartment building was renovated and converted to condos in 1980. Many of the units have seen further remodeling since that time.
The Carthage is listed in the Kalorama Historic District, as well as the National Register of Historic Places. The residences typically feature hardwood floors, high ceilings, wood-burning fireplaces, and formal dining rooms. Most of the units have private outdoor spaces, most often in the form of generously sized terraces that are accessible from both the den and the primary bedroom suite.
