The Brittany Condominiums

Located at 2001 16th Street NW, Washington, DC 20009 | U Street Corridor

With its grand Beaux-Arts architecture and an ideal location, the Brittany offers Old World charm just yards from trendy U Street with its shops, restaurants, and live entertainment. There are 57 condo units in the building, in both one and two-bedroom floorplans and ranging in size from around 500 to 1,000 square feet. While the Brittany is commonly associated with the U Street Corridor neighborhood, it is also on the southern cusp of Columbia Heights.

The Brittany sits on a triangular parcel of land at the junctures of V Street, New Hampshire Avenue, and 16th Street. Designed by Albert Moreland Schneider and completed in 1914, the building comports to the shape of its large lot with dramatic rounded triangle corners and roofline parapets that are reminiscent of castles of old. It was one of Washington s most fashionable addresses for apartment rentals back in the day and was converted to condos in 1979. Its traditional elegance provides an interesting contrast to the bulk of recent condo development in the U Street Corridor, a trend largely dominated by more contemporary looking buildings such as the Floridian, Langston Lofts, and the Rhapsody.

More About the Brittany, Washington, DC

A circular drive leads up the Brittany s front entrance with its massive double doors. The lobby offers vintage charm with its tile floors, wainscoting, and hanging chandeliers. Entering the condos, you ll find lovely wooden floors, fireplaces, original built-ins, and rows of tall windows offering terrific cityscape views. A number of units have fascinating room shapes that mirror the building s contours. The kitchens were nicely updated at the time of the condo conversion, and many have been further updated since that time with newer stone counters and stainless steel appliances. The bathrooms also offer a nice combination of old and new, with beautiful tile and updated tubs and showers. Most units also have stacked washers and dryers neatly tucked into closets, a convenience that many buildings of this age do not offer.

The pet-friendly Brittany has a community bike room, as well as storage lockers that are assigned to each unit. While the antique building does not have its own parking garage, there are plenty of nearby rental options, including across the street at the Camden-Roosevelt. Location is certainly part of the appeal, in a leafy and historic section of the neighborhood with numerous other landmark buildings. But head south on 16th Street and you ll quickly arrive at U Streets hipster coffeeshops, bars and restaurants, such as Exiles Bar, Baby Shank, Jojo Restaurants and Bar, Lost Society, and Busboys and Poets. Also worth noting is Meridian Hill Park, just a block north of the building. With its unique architecture, landscaping, and cascading water terraces, this 12-acre Washington, DC treasure was planned and developed by socialite Mary Foote Henderson, and built over a 28 year period.
