The Argyle Condominiums
Located at 3220 17th Street NW, Washington, DC 20010 | Mount Pleasant
Perched at the rounded corner of Mt Pleasant Street and Park Road, the Argyle is one of Washington, DC’s true landmark buildings. Built around 1910 as a luxury apartment building, the historic treasure in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood is now home to 40 updated condo residences. Additionally, the popular Argyle Market Deli bodega is on the ground floor, offering sandwiches and basic grocery items.
Designed by Alexander Sonnemann and built by the Kennedy Brothers, the four-story Argyle with its tapestry brick and terra cotta detailing is located near what was originally the turnaround point of the 16th Street trolley line. The spacious apartments appealed to upper class residents who didn’t wish to purchase houses, and who could enjoy the convenience of streetcar service into the city. The building was redeveloped and converted to condos during a lengthy restoration process that was completed in 2006. Other historic condo buildings in the Mount Pleasant area include the Overlook, the Northbrook, and the Embassy.
More About the Argyle, Washington, DC
In its original state, the Argyle with its Beaux-Arts design offered 40 roomy apartments, most of which were two bedrooms and two baths, with some residences having up to six rooms plus sleeping porches. The floors were double-quartered oak and virtually all units had bay windows. By the time the modern era arrived, the apartments had been subdivided to nearly double the number. However, the eventual condo conversion reverted to the original sized floorplans, as well as an adherence to the building’s vintage charm. Most units are two bedrooms, with a lesser number of one-bedroom layouts. Sizes generally range from around 850 to 1,000 square feet. Gourmet kitchens with stone counters and stainless steel appliances, plus tastefully updated bathrooms are complemented by large windows, hardwood floors, and in many cases, gas fireplaces. Virtually all units have washers and dryers.
Residents at the Argyle enjoy a roof terrace with excellent views, additional storage units, bicycle storage, an onsite super, and a commercial grade laundry for those days when you need more than just your in-unit machines. There is also an onsite daycare facility, as well as the aforementioned market/deli. The building with its U-shape and distinctive wings is close to neighborhood coffee shops, restaurants, and locally owned businesses. Nearby eateries include Elle, Beau Thai Mount Pleasant, Purple Patch, La Tejana, and others. The Powell Rec Center, Rock Creek Park, and Piney Branch Park are all in the area. The neighborhood has deep historical roots, dating all the way back to an 18th century land grant. Originally known as Pleasant Plains, the community was home to the Mount Pleasant Hospital during the Civil War. The area was later subdivided into multiple smaller neighborhoods, including Adams Morgan and Columbia Heights. Today, it is its own gem, with an independent vibe and diverse community.
