The Alexandra Condominiums
Located at 2101 N Street NW, Washington, DC 20037 | Dupont Circle
One of Dupont Circle’s historic landmark buildings, the Alexandra dates back to 1900 and is currently home to 31 condo residences. With its quintessential Beaux-Arts principles including distinctive front bays and detailed cornice work along the roofline, the structure was designed by the highly regarded Washington, DC architect Albert H. Beers. The Alexandra was originally built as apartment rentals and was later renovated and converted to condominium ownership.

The Alexandra is a four-story building, with the majority of condo residences at the top three levels. There are, however, a few first level units as well. Floorplans are primarily one-bedrooms, ranging from around 400 to 800 square feet. But despite the somewhat modest sizes, these units have lovely floorplans and finishes. Other historic buildings in the Dupont Circle neighborhood include the Cairo, the Albemarle, the Presidential co-ops, and 1745 N, a recently completed development that combines old rowhouses with new luxury construction.
More About the Alexandra, Washington, DC
Entering one of the residences at the Alexandra, you’ll discover an abundance of charm with renovated apartments that still retain their vintage sensibilities. Classic hardwood floors catch the light from tall windows with extra-deep sills, augmented by recessed overhead lighting. Bays are quite common, as are fun nooks and alcoves, arched entries, and wood-burning fireplaces. The original walk-in kitchens have often been opened up, either partially or completely. Washers and dryer hookups tuck neatly into closets, and the bathrooms were also nicely updated during the time of the condo conversion. Floorplans have an organic and traditional feel, a nice contrast to some of the linear layouts that can be prevalent with brand-new residential buildings. The interesting alcoves function well as work-from-home spaces, and many of the apartments also have built-in bookcases.
The boutique Alexandra building is pet-friendly but does not have its own parking garage. This is not uncommon, considering it was built well before the first car dealership in Washington, DC. Not to worry if you prefer public transit however, with the Dupont Circle Metro Station about four blocks away. The building is at 2101 N Street NW at the corner of 21st Street, with pleasant brick sidewalks and lots of leafy trees. This is the southwestern portion of Dupont Circle, close to the West End neighborhood which means a proximity to a popular greenbelt that includes the Rock Creek Trail, and Francis Park. Trader Joe’s is about four blocks away, and there’s tons of nearby restaurants such as Firefly, Mercy Me, Blue Duck Tavern, and Chef Geoff’s West End.
