Terrell Place has a unique origin story. The developers SmithGroup JJR together with CarrAmerica and Beacon Capital Partners, obtained two historic buildings on E Street NW, one being a Beaux Arts apartment building from the 1850s that had significant water damage, and the other being the adjacent Hecht’s department store built in 1924. The name Terrell Place was inspired by the story of Mary Church Terrell, a celebrated teacher and civil rights activist, who at the age of 87, led protests against Hecht’s department store for discriminatory practices.
The Clark Construction Group working with the renowned Gensler architectural firm and SmithGroup, devised a modern 11-story glass tower to connect the two buildings. Going even further, ESI Design was brought in to create an exciting lobby integrating 1,700 square feet of motion-activated LED walls, resulting in interactive art displaces. Meanwhile, ParkerRodriguez was tasked with landscape architecture and urban design concepts, delivering a two-story roof terrace with cabanas, fire pits, and catering access. Other amenities include a high-tech fitness center with virtual trainers, full service locker rooms, a game room, a conference center, and a bike room.
Penn Quarter is one of the downtown area’s most historic and exciting neighborhoods, with a huge commercial rebirth in recent years. Terrell Place is the name given to the entire three-building complex while the Residences at Terrell Place are the actual condos. There’s a Compass Coffee downstairs and numerous other coffeeshops, bars, and restaurants all within a block or two, including Teaism Penn Quarter, Rasika, Jaleo by Jose Andres, Oyamel Cocina Mexicana, Penn Social, Carmine’s Italian Restaurant, and so many more.
