More About Silver Spring Condominiums, Maryland

Silver Spring wasn't always the prototypical suburban Shangri-la. The large hub of Montgomery County has a long history, with the name coming from a glittering spring with mica in the water. The B&O Railroad found its way to town in the 1870s, spurring a major growth spurt. Farmland was divided into sizeable five and 10-acre lots and large homes were built, some of which still exist today. But many of those large residential properties would wind up being subdivided and redeveloped. Shopping and entertainment became a major theme in the 20th century. The Silver Spring Shopping Center and Silver Theatre were built in 1938, and by the 1950s, the downtown area had become one of the busiest retail hubs in the region. The opening of the Silver Spring Metro Station with Red Line service in 1978, and its subsequent expansion northward, fueled further housing development including the proliferation of condominiums.

While Downtown Silver Spring is an obvious location for condo buildings, it s not the only place where you ll find them. The southern areas near neighboring Takoma Park and Chevy Chase are ripe for upscale condominium buildings and townhouses, and a northwestern triangle where Georgia Avenue and the intercounty connector toll road come together is also densely populated. This is generally the pattern throughout Silver Spring. Commuter-friendly roadways around the perimeters are obvious choices for multifamily housing, while the large interior area is much more prone to detached single-family homes. With numerous smaller neighborhoods, an abundance of park and other green spaces, and all the Downtown shopping, art, culture, and dining, Silver Spring has something for everyone.
