North Potomac Luxury Real Estate

It would be easy to assume that North Potomac is immediately north of the community of Potomac, Maryland, but that is not exactly the truth. Instead, the suburb of Travilah is planted between Potomac and North Potomac. In fact, Travilah is the historic name for this part of Montgomery County. The name North Potomac was officially adopted in 1989 for a fast-growing community with numerous new subdivisions that had been cropping up since around 1982. Before that, the historic region with its verdant rolling meadows had been largely known for farmland. The name North Potomac was chosen primarily because the land was, indeed, north of the Potomac River.

North Potomac is nicely located about 20 miles from Washington, DC, and is easily accessible with the I-270 nearby. Additionally, state highway 190, also known as River Road, is easily reachable via Travilah Road. Seneca Creek State Park is about three miles north of North Potomac, and there are numerous greenspaces within North Potomac itself, including the sprawling Muddy Branch Stream Valley Park. Homes for sale in North Potomac tend to be large, comfortable and upscale, although not always as lavish as some of the estates in Potomac, or Bethesda.

More About North Potomac, MD

North Potomac can fly a little under the radar for some luxury real estate shoppers. As mentioned above, it’s not as prone to mega mansions as its sister community Potomac is. A better comparison when it comes to property prices would be Gaithersburg immediately to the north, Rockville to the east, or North Bethesda to the southeast. But North Potomac is still very much its own place, with a high median income, and a population of about 25,000. Equestrian sports are popular here, with the Potomac Horse Center here in North Potomac rather than in Potomac itself. There are also local businesses, including a Trader Joe’s and a Giant Food.

Some of the more commonly found older architectural styles in North Potomac include Colonial, Cape Cod, Ranch, and Split Level. There has also been a lot of newer custom construction in recent years, including Arts and Crafts, and various Contemporary Colonial styles. You’ll also find upscale townhouses, and even some condos. Prices tend to be a bit more competitive than communities like Chevy Chase, Somerset, or Bethesda, but this is still an area known for its large and attractive properties. With lots of room for expansion, North Potomac continues to build on the momentum that began about four decades ago, when the community was included in a Montgomery County transferable rights program that allowed residential developers to build new homes in greater densities. Today, North Potomac continues to flourish as it attracts home buyers searching for an idyllic way of life with an easy commute into the big cities.
