Navy Yard Condos
One of Washington, DC’s most rapidly developing neighborhoods for new condominiums is also one of the oldest and most historically significant parts of the District. Once one of the country’s largest military shipyards, The Navy Yard is making a name in stylish new housing, great restaurants, and major league baseball. Located south of Capitol Hill, this rapidly changing community along the Anacostia River has become one of Washington’s favorite places to work, live and play.
The Navy Yard area has long been referred to as the Yards for short. But there is now also a 42-acre mixed-use community known as The Yards, with shops, restaurants, entertainment, and new construction condo buildings. Yards Park is a sizeable greenspace with a water attraction, a performance venue, a dog park and more, and Nationals Park is the nearby site of the Washington Nationals baseball team. There’s also the Ballpark District, home to all sorts of fun stuff including the recently completed eNvy condo building. Other condominiums in the area include Avidian, the Bower, and Peninsula 88.
More About the Navy YarD, Washington, dc
The Navy Yard originated in 1798 and was especially productive in shipbuilding and ship repair during the war of 1812, and the Civil War era as well. But as time marched on and with the waters of the Anacostia too shallow to accommodate newer and larger vessels, the focus changed to producing naval ordnance (weapons and ammunition) as well as cultivating emerging technology. But by the 1960s, manufacturing had dwindled, the shoreline had become polluted, and the Navy Yard was used mostly for administrative and ceremonial purposes. Decades of cleanup and revitalization followed and today, the Navy has a reduced though still significant footprint, from offices to visitor attractions such as the Navy Museum and the Naval Historic Center.
But it is that which exists beyond Naval facilities that has really shaped the modern era of this waterfront neighborhood. Luxury condominiums, storefronts, bars and restaurants, and verdant parks have sprung up nearly everywhere you look. Food trucks, outdoor concerts, the Canal Park Ice Rink, the Riverwalk Trail, and the ballpark itself are among the many visitor attractions, but the neighborhood has also become an increasingly popular place to live. The Navy Yard is also home to the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District, known as DC’s fastest growing neighborhood due to new condominium construction. Commuting is easy via the nearby I-695, the Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro Station, and numerous local roadways leading north to next-door Capitol Hill.
