More About Modern & Contemporary Condos

The nation’s capital is closely associated with history and tradition. But it is also a place that inevitably evolves with time, and that includes housing. This is true throughout the greater Washington Metro region which includes parts of Northern Virginia and Maryland. Modern and contemporary condominiums are a major part of this shifting landscapes, but you won’t find them in all neighborhoods. Designated historic districts, for instance, limit and control new construction. But there are still many areas where new development flourishes.

Waterfront neighborhoods are obvious choices for tall buildings boasting impressive views. VIO and Amaris are two of the most architecturally stunning towers at the new Wharf attraction in Washington’s Southwest Waterfront. Hop across the Potomac River to Arlington and you’ll find ultra sleek glittering buildings like Turnberry Tower (currently the tallest residential building in the region), and the Waterview with its hotel-style amenities. The Oronoco in Old Town Alexandria is a revamped commercial structure just steps from the water’s edge, featuring modernist finishes and an eye-popping array of luxury amenities. Robinson Landing is the much heralded redevelopment of Old Town’s Robinson Terminal South warehouses, offering both upscale contemporary flats and multistory townhomes.

Modern and contemporary doesn’t always mean brand new. The iconic Watergate complex in Washington’s Foggy Bottom neighborhood is a splendid example of mid-century modern design, wrapped up in a full service package of discerning amenities. Many of the units with their walls of windows and sweeping balconies offer pristine views of the Potomac. Right next-door in Georgetown and similarly perched by the river is Washington Harbour, designed by Arthur Cotton Moore and delivered in 1984. Also in Georgetown is 3303 Water Street, a seven-story building at the edge of the C&O Canal, designed by Handel Architects and offering a modern interpretation of an industrial past.

There are plenty of other areas where modern and contemporary condominium development is flourishing. Bethesda, Maryland with its highly popular downtown corridor of shopping, dining, and entertainment, is a prime choice for contemporary condos with all the bells and whistles. The Darcy, Hampden Row, and the Lauren are just a few examples. Washington’s West End neighborhood features a number of great choices, including the highly stylized Westlight with its staggered glass façade and chic, minimalist interiors. Meanwhile, the rapidly expanding Tysons community in Fairfax County is awash in new construction with impressive new buildings like the 20-story Monarch, and the award-winning Verse in the mixed-use Boro community.

Modernism may be a design movement with century old roots, but it is perfectly suited to present day Washington, DC, and its outlying communities. From glittering new abstract towers to classic brick cubism, the terms modern and contemporary can simply be interpreted as something that was of the moment once, and that continues to push the envelope of style and innovation. Ultimately, it’s all part of a vibrant lifestyle in one of the nation’s true destination places.
