Matrix Condominiums

Located at 1529 14th Street NW, Washington, DC 20005 | Logan Circle

With its prime Logan Circle location and its upscale condo residences, Matrix checks off a lot of boxes. The historic building on 14th Street was redeveloped by Holladay Construction and reconceptualized by noted architects Eric Colbert & Associates. The ultimate result was an expansion of the original low-rise structure while still retaining the vintage charm of one of Washington, DC’s early automobile showrooms. Matrix is now home to 40 condominium units in one and two-bedroom floorplans, ranging from about 700 to 1,450 square feet of living space. The layouts include both flats and true lofts.

Located in the heart of Logan Circle’s dining and shopping district, Matrix belongs to a fascinating niche of condo buildings that used to be something very different. The area bounded by 14th, P, Church, and 15th Street was once known as Auto Row, home to early car dealerships and alleyway repair shops. There were numerous other commercial structures and warehouses as well. The building that now houses Matrix was originally constructed in 1916 as a Nash Motors showroom. Other residential redevelopments in this tightly compressed area include Lofts 14 (a former car showroom), Citta 50 (a former coal factory), and Cooper Lewis (a former hardware store). This grouping represents just a tiny portion of Washington, DC’s historic buildings that have been transformed from their original purpose into modern luxury condominiums. Other examples include old schoolhouses, churches, streetcar storage, horse stables, a hospital, and even a steam laundry.

More About Matrix, Washington, DC

From the street, the main part of the Matrix building looks much like it did in its heyday, a gray concrete Art Deco edifice with huge storefront-style windows at the main level and multi-paned factory-style windows above. The builders added an additional three stories that are set back and staggered from the front, for a modern yet unobtrusive appearance. The sidewalk-facing ground level is currently home to office space. Once inside, the residences themselves are revealed, with highly contemporary finishes that can include exposed concrete accent walls in select areas, massive windows, high ceilings, gleaming blonde hardwood floors, and exposed ductworks. The kitchens are open with stone counters, custom cabinetry, and stainless steel appliances. Bathrooms are equally well-appointed. In-unit washer and dryer hookups are standard, there’s a terrific roof deck with grills, and a limited number of assigned parking spaces off the rear alley.

Located directly on 14th Street, the Matrix condominium building is conveniently close to many of Logan Circle’s favorite restaurants, shops, and other businesses. Le Diplomate, Vin Sur Vingt Wine Bar, Barcelona Wine Bar, Chick + Whiskey, Etto, Logan Tavern, Milk Bar, and Pearl Dive Oyster Bar are all nearby. Whole Foods Market is just around the corner, and the neighborhood’s namesake Logan Circle roundabout with its grassy inner park is three blocks away. Logan Circle dates back to the 1870s and has seen numerous changes over time. The result is a vibrant collection of new and old, with antique buildings standing side by side with new construction. In some cases, including the Matrix, history and modernity exist within the same four walls.
