More About Loudoun County, Virginia
Picture equestrian sports, lush golf courses, wineries, and Main Street charm in lovely small town settings where you can brunch at a sidewalk café or peruse the local art gallery scene. If it sounds like a scene from a movie, you wouldn’t be far off the mark. Loudoun County has been the setting for numerous cinematic location shoots over the years, and it’s also the home of the annual Middleburg Film Festival. An upscale region that regularly ranks as the wealthiest place in the nation, Loudoun is also heavily involved in government contracting and high-tech industries. All this has played into the county’s well-earned status as favorite place to live, grow, prosper, and enjoy.
Like much of Virginia. Loudoun County is rooted in American history, dating back to an English land grant in 1649. It was settled in the early 1700s and officially founded in 1757 with Leesburg as the county seat. A scene of prominent Civil War battles, the region remained a heartland of farmers up until the modern age, as residential development increased. You can still find historic homes including country farmhouses, and numerous examples of beautiful Victorian and Colonial architecture in “old town” sections of villages and neighborhoods throughout the county. But increasingly, it’s the newer custom built homes on large estates that draw the attention of buyers moving to the area.
Covering some 522 square miles, Loudoun County has a population of over 421,000 and growing. There’s plenty of room for residential expansion, a factor that plays positively into the decision for many to move to a region known for green spaces and a “big sky” feel. In addition to the town of Leesburg with its shopping, entertainment, country clubs and Potomac River frontage, popular communities include Ashburn, the appropriately named Countryside, Potomac Falls, Sterling, Hillsboro, and Landsdowne. Luxury real estate in Loudoun is represented by numerous architectural styles, such as Georgian, Mediterranean, French Country, French Normandy, Colonial Revival, Tudor, Arts and Crafts, Log and Stone, and Queen Anne. While it’s not uncommon to find historic manor homes that have expanded over time, many of the largest homes are more recently built.
Detached single-family homes, often with a lot of acreage represent the bulk of luxury real estate properties for sale in Loudoun County. However, upscale townhomes and condos can be found in some communities, especially those with significant town centers. Loudoun County is about 30 miles outside of Washington, DC, and is immediately northwest of Fairfax County. From mountains to rivers and lakes, and from national parks to the creature comforts of towns and cities, Loudoun County’s stellar reputation is justly deserved.
