The Gibson Condominiums
Located at 1140 23rd Street NW, Washington, DC 20037 | West End
Situated right in the heart of Washington DC’s West End, the Gibson is a 10-story condominium with 80 residential units. Completed in 1981, the building was part of a wave of new residential expansion that began in the 1970s and continues to this day. City planners even had a name for the movement at the time, a “New Town for the West End.” These days, the West End neighborhood is one of the most vibrant and desirable places to live in the District.
Condos at the Gibson come in a nice selection of sizes and floorplans, with one and two bedrooms models ranging from roughly 670 to 1,500 square feet of living space. The majority of units are somewhere between those two measurements, with an airy and open feel. Many of the residences have been updated over the years. Other condominiums in the West End community include the Columbia, the Ritz-Carlton West End, and Westlight.
More About the Gibson, Washington, DC
The Gibson was built in the International style, a form of architecture that became quite popular in the mid-20th century, typified by a boxy, linear shape with wide rectangular balconies. The building isn’t as aggressively abstract as the recently completed Westlight right next-door, but the modernist influences are definitely present. The condo units themselves continue the contemporary aesthetic with large, open spaces, giant windows, and interesting cubist elements such as standalone fireplaces. Hardwood floors and well-appointed kitchens and baths add to the allure, along with extra details such as the French doors that lead into the kitchens in select units. The private covered outdoor balconies are quite large, and ideal for morning coffee or evening libations. In-unit washers and dryers provide further convenience.
Amenities at the Gibson include a large and stylish lobby with a staffed desk and concierge service, a nice rooftop deck and lounge area, a club room with a kitchenette and wet bar, a shady rear courtyard, a parking garage, and bike racks. The location adds another positive element, positioned along 23rd Street between M and L Streets. This is an area where condo living, dining, and shopping go hand-in-hand, with a number of upscale and contemporary residential buildings mingling with commercial attractions. The new West End Library is next-door, with lots of popular restaurants within a block or two. Examples include Imperfecto, Bluestone Lane, Rasika West End, Bread & Chocolate, and Blue Duck Tavern. Trader Joe’s is also conveniently close.
