More About Friendship Heights, Washington, DC
Friendship Heights dates all the way back to a “friendship grant” in 1715, hence the name. That early colonial land grant was part of large swath of rural farmland that existed for nearly two centuries. But the arrival of a trolley line from Georgetown circa 1900, led to a development boom that was unhindered by zoning restrictions. Businesses and apartment buildings along Wisconsin Avenue, and residential home lots sprung up at the same time. Vintage houses in the neighborhood include a number of attractive styles, including Colonial, Craftsman bungalows, Queen Anne, Tudor, and mid-century Ranches. There is also a smattering of brick rowhouses, and even some newer luxury condos.
The small Friendship Heights community is surrounded by other popular residential neighborhoods such as Chevy Chase to the east, Tenleytown to the south, and American University Park to the southwest. The similarly named Friendship Village neighborhood is on the other side of the Maryland border, and shares land grant history with its sister community to the south. This a very desirable area to live in, with a comfortably upscale vibe that is far from ostentatious. Retail options run the gamut from indie thrift stores to established big box choices. There’s a nearby Whole Foods, a Rodman’s grocery store, numerous popular restaurants, and a string of coffee shops and bakeries.
