Columbia Heights Condominiums

With its central location and vibrant local culture, Columbia Heights has surged in popularity in recent years, including with condo shoppers who appreciate the diversity of options. The historic Washington, DC neighborhood can be found north of the U Street Corridor and immediately east of Adams Morgan. The real estate market includes DC’s familiar colorful rowhouses, and an increasing number of condominium developments which are often boutique in nature. It’s all part of a bustling and relatable neighborhood that has revitalized in a steady upward pattern, while not bowing to rampant commercialization.

Home to the uniquely designed Meridian Hill Park with its statues and cascading water terraces, Columbia Heights has a deep backstory and has gone through numerous changes when it comes to housing and development patterns. A wave of construction activity in the early part of the 20th century resulted in low and mid-rise apartments as well as industrial activity. Flash forward to modern day Columbia Heights and many of these older buildings have been converted into condos. There are some brand-new contemporary structures as well. A sampling of residential buildings would include Apex, The Berkely, The Fitz, Helicopter Factory, The Embassy, and Wardman Court.

More About Columbia Heights Condominiums, Washington, DC

Columbia Heights was once rural farmland. An early mansion built by Commodore David Porter in 1819 on high ground was named Meridian Hill. The estate was subsequently occupied by John Quincy Adams, and later purchased by the government. Meanwhile, real estate developer and socialite Mary Foote Henderson, wife of Senator John B. Henderson, began buying dozens of large lots in the area. Known as the “Empress of Sixteenth Street,” Ms. Henderson and her husband built a giant manor known variously as Boundary Castle and Henderson Castle. The Beekman Place townhouses now stand where the old castle-like home once stood. Ms. Henderson was one of the guiding forces behind the creation of Meridian Hill Park where the old Porter estate had been. She also built numerous large homes, embassy buildings, and apartment houses. The modern day makeup of housing, including older buildings that have been converted to condominium use, traces back to these early days of development in areas between 14th Street in Columbia Heights and 17th Street in what is now next-door Adams Morgan.

The highly walkable Columbia Heights neighborhood includes both hilly and flatter terrain, with numerous bars and restaurants along major avenues like 16th Street, 14th Street, and Georgia Avenue, as well as 18th Street in Adams Morgan. The nearby U Street Corridor to the south is also rich with shops, restaurants, and other attractions. The DC USA Mall is also in Columbia Heights, as is the Tivoli Theatre, the Dance Institute of Washington, Howard University, grocery stores like Whole Foods and Harris Teeter, and the Columbia Heights Metro Station with Green Line service.
