Citta 50 Condominiums
Located at 1450 Church Street NW, Washington, DC 20005 | Logan Circle
The Citta 50 condominium complex has come a long way from its earliest incarnation as a coal factory. Located at 1450 Church Street in Logan Circle, the three-story brick structure was designed by John Lankford, the District’s first registered African American architect, and delivered in 1900. More than a century later, developer Andrew Economaksi partnered with the well-known architectural firm Bonstra Haresign to give the unassuming three-story brick structure a new lease on life, adding taller wings to the side and the rear. Completed in 2008, Citta 50 is now home to 27 upscale condo residences.
This part of the Logan Circle neighborhood is often referred to as Auto Row, due to the number of early 20th century automobile showrooms and repair shops that once flourished here. It wasn’t all car dealerships and garages, there were numerous other commercial buildings as well. The area began to change after the end of World War II as the demand for new cars grew and dealerships increasingly moved to larger locations in the suburbs. By the 1970s, Washington, DC was entering an era of decline including the abandonment of countless old buildings including the one-time coal factory. But the tides shifted once again in the modern era, with alleyway warehouses and unlikely properties becoming the new frontier of hipster condos with industrial chic appeal. Other popular residential buildings along this stretch of Church Street include Rainbow Lofts, Lofts 14, and 1400 Church.
More About Citta 50, Washington, DC
Church Street between 14th and 15th Street is a fairly narrow, one-way road that is more akin to an alley than a major thoroughfare. This is part of the enduring charm of Washington, DC, a capital city that continually tries to work within the margins of Pierre L’Enfant’s original map and design from 1791. Sometimes the grand experiment works and sometimes it doesn’t. But there is no denying the resurgence of Logan Circle, and Citta 50 is a good example of how recycling and improving old properties can have a positive effect. The building delivers a striking amalgamation of old and new, with the taller modernist sections offering a visually pleasing counterpoint to the original low-rise warehouse.
Inside, you’ll find a mixture of one and two-bedroom floorplans, ranging in size from around 700 to 1,700 square feet with largest being the upper level penthouses. Layouts include both flats and loft-styles, with bamboo floors, oversized windows, and open gourmet kitchens featuring stone counters and islands, custom cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, and hanging pendant lights. Some units also have private outdoor spaces.
This is a very active area, with shops, restaurants, and boutique retailers in all directions, including along 14th Street which acts as Logan Circle’s main business drag. Milk Bar is across the street at the corner of 15th and Church, and Le Diplomate, Chicken + Whiskey, Logan Tavern, Call Your Mother Deli, and 54 Noodles Bar are just a few of the other local favorites. Also in the neighborhood is Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Amazon Fresh. Vida Fitness, Flow Yoga, Fuse Pilates, Starbucks, and Studio Theatre.
