Maryland’s Chevy Chase was residentially developed in 1890 as a planned community that was easily accessible due to the arrival of an electric streetcar line. It is further delineated into Chevy Chase Section 5 and North Chevy Chase, each of which are incorporated villages in Montgomery County. Additionally, there is a small town known as Chevy Chase View north of the Capital Beltway. And finally, there’s Chevy Chase in Washington, DC, dating back to the same Chevy Chase Land Company residential development as its next-door sister communities.

From old originals built during the trolley days to new custom construction, there are plenty of upscale choices to be had. Among many architectural styles are Victorian farmhouse, both brick and clapboard Colonial Revivals, Arts and Crafts, Georgian, English Tudor, Cape Cod, Split-levels, and Modern.

New custom construction, of which there is a fair amount, also comes in various styles. It really is one big community that has grown and diversified over time, unhindered by historic district designations. You may see a big new trophy home across the street from an original bungalow. But there is always the commonality of leafy streets, lovely yards, and a welcome level of comfort.

While the vast majority of homes in Chevy Chase, MD are detached single-family houses, there are some instances of luxury condos and townhouses, most notably along Wisconsin Avenue and Connecticut Avenue. There are also nice restaurants, a Whole Foods, a Trader Joe’s, lots of coffee places, and clothes shopping galore, the latter at upscale centers and malls like The Shops at Wisconsin Place, The Collection at Chevy Chase, and The Shops of Wisconsin Avenue. There is also a Metro station, although technically located in Friendship Heights on Wisconsin Avenue at the corner of Western Avenue.
