Fronted by green lawns and a circular drive, the landmark building with its Beaux-Arts corners and promontory was known for a lengthy period as Saint Catherine’s Home for Working Girls. Intended as a dormitory for single women who would pay a modest weekly fee for board and job training, the Capitol Hill location was operated by the Baltimore-based Sisters of Mercy. This altruistic global network was founded by Irish Catholic laywoman Catherine McAuley, along with two other sisters and the backing of the church. Also known as Three Sisters, the charitable outreach operated several Saint Catherine’s chapters throughout the U.S. and abroad, including orphanages, shelters, and homes for working women.
