Boston House Condominiums

Located at 1711 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20036 | Dupont Circle

Offering 270 residences, the Boston House condominium complex is one of the largest in the Dupont Circle neighborhood. Completed in 1950, the eight-story building is one of the earliest examples of midcentury modern architecture in Washington, DC, exemplified by its cubist forms and wide bands of clerestory windows. With its circular front drive and a jutting shelf-like overhang that seems to float in the air, Boston House is located along Massachusetts Ave, between 17th and 18th Street.

Inventory at Boston House Condominium

Despite its rather traditional name, Boston House is quite contemporary inside and out, including a lobby straight out of the TV show Mad Men. The condos are primarily studio and one-bedroom models ranging in size from around 450 to 800 square feet. There are some exceptions, due to buyers who have chosen to combine two units into one. These rare residences, when available, can be up to 1,350 square feet or more. While Dupont Circle is often associated with historic buildings from the 1800s and early 1900s, there are some newer buildings as well. In addition to Boston, other contemporary condo communities include Dupont West, 1800 R, Church Place, and Apolline.

More About Boston House, Washington, DC

Condo interiors at Boston House reflect an interesting and influential period of time for architecture, as post-war modernism was just starting to take root. The living and dining areas are open, which hadn’t often been the norm prior to the 1950s. Similarly, the wide bands of windows separated only by metal trim were quite innovative, inviting the sunlight in and also providing more expansive views of the outside world. The original hardwood parquet floors are typical of the period, as were the galley kitchens. Many of the apartments have been remodeled over the years, including newer hardwood floors and in some cases, kitchens that have been opened up to the adjacent living areas. Nonetheless, it is quite common for owners to take pride in the building’s midcentury modern origins, and you’ll often find kitschy interior design ideas that meld those ‘50s and 60’s sensibilities with today’s luxury appliances and finishes. It is also worth noting that the studio and one-bedroom units at Boston House tend to be competitively priced, especially for Dupont Circle.

The aforementioned lobby with its wall of giant windows and faithfully 1950s modern chic sensibilities is staffed 24 hours a day, and residents also enjoy secure package delivery. The rooftop deck features lounge furniture, a pergola, gas grills, and excellent city views. In-unit washers and dryers are not allowed but there are shared laundry facilities. Additionally, cats are permitted but not dogs. There is a limited amount of off-street assigned parking behind the building that is sometimes available for sale. Those choosing public transit will appreciate that the Dupont Circle Metro Station is just a couple blocks away. Location is certainly part of the appeal, with Whole Foods just a few blocks away and tons of nearby bars, bakeries, and restaurants as well. Rewind, Iron Gate, Tabard Inn, and Giovanni’s Trattu are a few of the local dining options. Downtown DC is just a few blocks to the south.
