The neighborhood has its own small commercial strip along MacArthur Boulevard, including some highly popular restaurants like Black Salt, Cafe Vino, Buna Bicycle Café, and Kotobuki. One of the first things visitors will remark on is Berkley’s verdant appearance. It’s literally surrounded by greenery, including Palisades Park, Battery Kemble Park, and Glover Archbold Park. There’s also the C&O Canal Towpath, the Capital Crescent Trail, and the Potomac River. It’s a walking, hiking, and bicycling paradise. The next obvious thing that stands out, is the collection of extraordinary homes. The real estate picture includes a diverse range of architecture with French Normandy, French Country, Georgian, Mediterranean, Tudor, various types of Colonial, Victorian, Cape Cod, Arts and Crafts, Modernist, and more. If that list makes you dream of mansions and grand estates, you’re on the right page.
More About Berkley, Washington, DC
Berkley is different from other parts Washington, DC in that it developed at a very leisurely pace over an extended period of time. The neighborhood with its naturally hilly terrain was rural in its early days, with only a few homes built during the early 1900s. That gradually picked up over the following decades with more properties emerging around the neighborhood’s perimeters. There were additional pockets of activity during the 1950s and 1960s, and a larger number of homes filling in the spaces since that time. You can truly find anything from antiques to brand new construction in Berkley
The neighborhood is sometimes erroneously referred to as Foxhall Crescent, this due to the Foxhall Crescent housing subdivision as well as the Foxhall Playground, both existing within Berkley’s boundaries. But Berkley is indeed its own special place, home to the Kreeger Museum, The Field School, and The George Washington University: Mount Vernon Campus. The community also abuts the Georgetown Reservoir, as well as the canal and the Potomac River. With all the surrounding greenery and water, it may seem like a very secluded space. But residents enjoy the peace and quiet, along with local coffee shops, a CVS, mom and pop stores, and some great restaurants.
