Perched on lush and slightly hilly grounds, 3900 Watson Place is a cooperative community named for its street address in Washington, DC’s desirable Cathedral Heights neighborhood. Built in 1960 with a mid-century modern ethos, the complex with its two nine-story buildings is situated on five acres of its own along with an additional 10 acres that are shared with the adjacent Westchester complex. The 3900 Watson Place co-op complex was initially known simply as Watson Place and is still referred to as such by many of its residents. Other notable residential buildings in Cathedral Heights include the Towers, 3110 Wisconsin, 4200 Cathedral, the Westchester, Alban Towers, and several others.

At the time of its construction, 3900 Watson Place was sometimes looked at askance by its next-door neighbors at the Westchester, a five-building complex dating to 1931 with looming Moorish facades. After all, the sprawling landscape now had to be shared. Additionally, the cubist Watson Place structures with their clean lines and huge windows looked quite different. But this was a new era in architecture and lifestyles, and the developers of Watson Place were eager to market their new city residences to a post-War populace eager for change and convenience. The sales pamphlet touted the new modernity with snappy catch phrases such as “outstanding innovations in the scientifically coordinated Hot Point electric kitchens.”
