Named for its street address, 1800 R Street is an eight-story, midcentury condominium building at the corner of 18th Street in the heart of Dupont Circle. Completed in 1964, the taupe brick structure with its cubist appearance and tall windows was initially an upscale apartment building before being renovated and converted to condo ownership in 1978. There are 40 residential units inside, most of which are either one bedroom, or one bedroom plus a den that can also serve nicely as a second bedroom.

Dupont Circle is a historic district, famed for its gracious antique rowhouses and grand old mansions. Buildings from the 1960s era are much less common in this neighborhood. The 1800 R Street building presents yet another unusual wrinkle in that the majority of condo residences are duplexes, with square holes cut into the ceilings through which floating stairs ascend. The modernist stairwells are either spiral or a series of angles. This is not to say that all units are so designed, as there are also a smaller number of flats. But the size range is fairly narrow nonetheless, from about 735 to 970 square feet. Other contemporary condo buildings in the area include Dupont West, the Palladium, and Church Place.
