1400 Church Condominiums
Located at 1400 Church Street NW, Washington, DC 20005 | Logan Circle
Developed by Metropolis and designed by Callison RTKL, 1400 Church is also known as Lofts 14 II, and is a smaller counterpart to the larger Lofts 14 on the opposite side of the street in the Logan Circle neighborhood. Both buildings are from the same development and design team, and each was completed in 2005. The 1400 Church Street building is home to 37 one and two-bedroom condo units, ranging in size from about 744 to 1,528 square feet. Almost all are loft layouts, with stairs leading up to a bedroom, a den, or some other form of living space.
As with its sister building across the street, 1400 Church was originally an early car dealership. In fact, there were a number of showrooms and mechanic shops along 14th, Church, P, and 15th streets, creating a phalanx of automotive sales and service know as Auto Row in the 1920s and 1930s. The larger showrooms eventually moved out to the suburbs, but some body shops and smaller garages remained entrenched along the alleys and side streets. More recently, these industrial type buildings have become a boon for developers looking to fill the need for trendy, upscale condominium housing with retro trappings. Other examples are Rainbow Lofts (formerly a paint and body shop), and Matrix (a former Nash Motors showroom).
More about 1400 Church Street, Washington, DC
Lofts 14 and Lofts 14 II get their names logically enough, as they are each located at the corner of 14th and Church. As for 1400 Church Street itself, you’ll find a mixed-use structure with a classic concrete façade, complemented by rows of massive windows. The first floor is devoted to commercial space including restaurants, with condos on levels two through six. These are very spacious residences, with high ceilings that are usually either coffered or raw concrete. Huge floor-to-ceiling window walls along the living/dining areas allow substantial amounts of natural light to flood the blonde bamboo floors. Exposed brick and mortar walls and overhead piping add to the vibe, along with open kitchens that hug the walls, allowing even more living space. Some of the condos have their own private outdoor spaces, and in-unit washers and dryers are standard. Most residences come with garage parking.
Location is a huge part of the appeal along the 14th Street corridor. This urbanized area has gone through a concerted development boom in recent years, with new housing, shops, cafes, bars, art galleries, and boutique clothing retailers. There’s a Whole Foods Market about a block to the south, and the Logan Circle roundabout with its grassy inner park is two blocks east. This is where past and present have come together in a symbiotic relationship, and where everything you need is easily accessible. You’ll be in the heart of one of Washington’s favorite neighborhoods, and less than a mile from the Downtown DC halls of political power.
